When in 1861 was suspended the activities of the mint of Bologna the coinages and punches for the manufacture of coins and medals were handed to the Archaeological Museum of Bologna, where they are still preserved. The coinage shown here was used to make the reverse of the half shield of 50 bolognini, issued by the mint of Bologna for the Pope Pius VI (1775-1799).
The figure of San Petronio, with miter and pastoral, seated on clouds on the right, while he is blessing the city of Bologna, indicated by the two towers, is in association with the legend S. PETRONIVS BONONIAE PROT (San Petronio protector of Bologna). Under the clouds the emblems of Bologna with a lion's and Cardinal Legato Ignazio Boncompagni's heads.
