Henry VI stopped in Bologna in February 1191 while he was going to Rome to be crowned. To the host city granted the privilege to coin money: Bologna chose as unit of measure
the third of the imperial money.
The intensity of trade favored, later, the minting of a big silver coin, which will be called "large bolognino", issued since 1236. On the obverse appears, in the circle, the legend ENRICVS, preceded by a cross, and at the center IPRT (imperator); on the reverse, the inscription: in the circle, cross, BONONI and, at the center of the field, the final letter A among four globes. The bolognino, coin of good alloy and regular weight, was much appreciated and imitated by mints in northern and central Italy.
