Following a long phase of experimentation, a new technique for working stone emerged around 350,000 years ago. The sequence of actions to create functionally more effective implements was carefully planned.

The quality and number of artefacts that were obtained (blades and flakes, scrapers and so on) demonstrate the success of this technique, known as the “Levalloisian stone-flaking technique”, which became distinctive of the Middle Palaeolithic. The activities of Palaeolithic hunters and the sites frequented by humans multiplied, representing an extraordinary example of adaptation and occupation of the area between the ancient hilly zones and the plains. At the peak of this trend, around 150,000–120,000 years ago, numerous deposits dotted the long zone that extends virtually uninterruptedly to the Adriatic coast.
