The museum’s prehistoric collection is located in room I, which since December 2007 has doubled in size and has been completely renewed in terms of layout. Ordered chronologically, it presents the earliest traces of man’s presence in the Bologna area, from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age.
Only a few objects, for the most part tools of polished stone, perhaps from the Bologna area, come from the city’s early collections in the University’s Antiquities Room and subsequently transferred to the museum in 1881. Most of the objects now on show are casual finds or the result of digs effected during the late 19th and early 20th century. This is the period when Bologna and Emilia Romagna participated as protagonists in the birth of a new science: palaeontology.
The renewed section also includes some important holdings from recent archaeological digs; these are on loan to the museum thanks to the collaboration with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici of Emilia Romagna. These finds throw some fresh light also on older finds, offering data from digs conducted in accordance with the latest scientific criteria.
